Frequently Asked Questions

The things people most often ask before ordering a Clydesdale building. If your question isn't here, give us a call or send a message — we're happy to talk it through.

Ordering & quotations

Do you publish prices?

No. Every Clydesdale building is made to order, so the price depends on the size, specification, roof, fittings and where in the country it is going. Rather than quote a figure that would be wrong for your building, we talk through what you need and give you a written quotation for exactly that. Quotations are free and without obligation.

Can I buy a building off the shelf?

All of our buildings are made to order in our Derbyshire workshops. We do offer a standard range of stables in standard sizes, which is the quickest route if one suits, but even those are built for you rather than taken from stock. If you would like to see the construction and finish before you order, we can often arrange for you to view an existing Clydesdale building near you.

How long will my building take?

It depends on the size and specification of the building and how busy the workshop is at the time, so we give you a current lead time with your quotation rather than a generic figure. If you need stabling urgently, a mobile field shelter is often the quickest option.

Do you offer delivery-only or supply-only?

Yes. On standard designs we can supply ex-works from the farm or deliver without installation, which saves up to 25% depending on the building. Most customers choose full installation by our own joiners, but if you have the skills and the help on site, supply-only is a good way to bring the cost down.

Are you the cheapest?

No, and we do not try to be. We are not a budget manufacturer, but you will find we offer excellent value for money: the specification and build quality of our buildings is unmatched. Every manufacturer claims the same, so we always recommend comparing the specification of materials (cladding thickness, framing, roof timbers and fittings) before you buy.

Design & planning

Can you build to my own size or design?

Yes, that is the point of making to order. We regularly build different sizes and heights, different roof pitches and materials, extra ventilation and louvred windows, lined roofs and insulation, tack rooms, corner boxes and combination buildings such as garage/stable or garage/workshop. Tell us what you need and we will design around it.

Do I need planning permission?

Often, yes. Stables, barns and most permanent timber buildings need planning permission in many situations, and the rules vary between councils and depending on where the building sits. If you are within the Peak District National Park, the National Park Authority handles planning rather than the local council. Some smaller garden buildings and mobile field shelters can fall outside the need for permission, but that is decided case by case. We always recommend checking with your local planning authority before ordering, and we can support your application if required.

Can you help with a planning application?

Yes. We offer design advice and can support your planning application with the drawings and specification the planners need. Get in touch early and we can talk through what is likely to be required.

What roof and finish options are there?

We offer a choice of roof pitches and roofing materials, including clay tiles and wooden shingles on many designs, plus lined and insulated roofs on stables and barns. Buildings can be supplied stained or painted, and features such as deep roof overhangs, soffits, bargeboards and finials are available where you want a more finished look.

Delivery & installation

Where do you deliver and install?

Throughout the UK. We are based at Shedyard Farm in the High Peak, Derbyshire, within an hour of most of the North West and Midlands, and our buildings are delivered and erected by our own team of joiners across the country.

Who installs the building?

Our own team of joiners. The same people who understand how the buildings are made put them up on your site, which is a large part of why we can guarantee them.

What base do I need?

Our buildings are installed onto a base that you have prepared. What that needs to be depends on the building, so we set out the exact requirements with your quotation and are happy to advise before you bring in a groundworker.

What do I need to have ready before installation day?

The base finished and clear access for the delivery vehicle and the joiners. We confirm the specifics for your building and site when we arrange the installation date, so there are no surprises on the day.

Build quality & warranty

What warranty do you give?

Every static building is guaranteed for 7 years from installation.

What are the buildings made from?

Heavy duty, joinery-grade timber throughout. Cladding is 1" thick V-jointed, planed, pressure-treated tongue and groove Redwood with a deep interlocking profile, compared with the half-inch shiplap you may find elsewhere. Framing is 3" x 2" planed and eased, preservative-treated Redwood with 4" roof timbers, and fittings are heavy duty hot-dipped galvanised hinges and coach bolts. A typical 2m x 3.5m section of a Clydesdale building weighs around 140kg where others would typically be 70kg.

What is a sectional timber building?

A building that is manufactured in panels (walls, gables, roof) in our workshops and then transported and assembled on your site. It means the joinery is done under cover to a consistent standard, and installation on site is quick and tidy.

How do the buildings stand up to the weather?

Very well. We use traditional vertical cladding, which is an attractive, very strong construction with excellent resistance to driving rain, and the timber is pressure treated with preservative and given a secondary coat of preservative stain. Our buildings have been standing on exposed Peak District hillsides for decades.

About us

Can I see a Clydesdale building before I order?

We do not operate a showroom or display site, but with over forty years of buildings standing across the UK there is very often a Clydesdale near you, and many of our customers are happy to show their building to prospective buyers. Tell us where you are and what you are considering, and we will see what we can arrange. Our product pages and brochures also set out the construction and specification in detail.

Where are you based?

Shedyard Farm, Laneside Road, High Peak, Derbyshire SK22 4QN. Our farm workshops and office are on the one site, within an hour of most of the North West and Midlands.

How long have you been making timber buildings?

Over 40 years. Clydesdale Timber Products was established in the early 1980s in Stockport as a manufacturer of high-specification sectional timber buildings for the equestrian market, sporting estates and the National Trust, and moved to the High Peak in the early 1990s. The business is still family run, with the original founder active to this day.

Still got a question?

Every building we make is different, so the best answers come from a conversation. Call us or send a message and we will talk it through with you.
